The Dark Blue half of the City of Discovery may still be taking full advantage of the bragging rights gained thanks to Dundee’s derby win over United on Wednesday night.
However, Dens boss Paul Hartley has warned his players they haven’t achieved anything just yet ahead of this afternoon’s crunch meeting with Tayside rivals St Johnstone.
Dundee have a top six place firmly in their grasp and they know a win at McDiarmid would seal their spot there after the split.
Hartley though is concerned that with all the euphoria of the derby victory still to die down, it could affect his players and he has demanded they are fully focused on the game against Saints.
Hartley said: “I think it (derby win) gives the whole club a lift.
“I think you feel better about yourself in terms of coming into work and the atmosphere changes.
“We just need to focus on the next game ahead which is against St Johnstone.
“It’s another massive match for us.
“We said that recently when we had these fixtures coming up like Aberdeen, Inverness, Dundee United, St Johnstone and Celtic.
“But I think we’re just focused right now on this one.
“That’s what we’ve tried to say to the players that they’ve given themselves an opportunity so now we’ll try to stay there.
“But we haven’t done anything yet.
Hartley added: “I think you have to try to forget the derby win.
“It’s been a short turnaround and all our attention now is on St Johnstone in terms of getting the players focused again.
“I had a good chat with them on Friday as far as the game and preparation and what it means to us is concerned.
“It’s about looking ahead and forgetting what happened on Wednesday.
“We’ve spoken about the position and we’ve done well so far.
“We haven’t achieved anything though.
“It’s up to us as a group to try and cement our place in the top six.
“We know we’re facing a good St Johnstone team who have been in the top six year-in year-out.
“They’ve been the benchmark in terms of how they work their squad and the budget.
“They’ve done tremendously well.
“We know it will be a tough game but we go there hoping to put on a good show.”
Hartley revealed that top goalscorer Greg Stewart is doubtful for the game in Perth after picking up another knock against United with the manager calling on officials to give the striker more protection.
He said: “Greg has taken a knock.
“I think he’s getting targeted now when you see some of the treatment he’s had.
“We’ve been watching the games and think he could do with some more protection from the officials.
“I think we’ve noticed that probably over the last couple of months.
“He’s doing so well and is a real danger to teams which means he’s getting singled out by opponents now.
“Greg took a little whack on Wednesday so we’ll give him until the last minute.”
Gary Harkins, Gary Irvine and Luka Tankulic are all still out through injury.
