The long wait for a Dundee win over Inverness Caledonian Thistle goes on, but a late comeback point will be some consolation for the Dark Blues.
Kane Hemmings grabbed his 20th goal of the season in the 86th minute to cancel out Caley Thistle’s early opener.
Dundee now haven’t beaten the Highlanders in their last 16 league games but they had enough chances to take all three points in this one.
In the end though, Paul Hartley’s men had to settle for the point which keeps them above their opponents in the top six.
Inverness made a strong start to the match and were splitting the Dundee defence open more often than Paul Hartley would have been comfortable with.
On one such occasion Miles Storey was put through the middle. His first touch took him too wide but Dundee only half-cleared the ball and in the end Scott Bain had to save low from Jordan Roberts.
Then on 13 minutes Caley Thistle got their reward for their early pressure when another through -ball down the centre of the park saw Dundee hands raised for offside but, crucially, not the assistant referee’s.
One-on-one with the keeper, Ross Draper took it round Bain and side-footed the ball into an empty net.
The goal sparked a Dundee revival of sorts, and on 18 minutes they got Hemmings behind the Inverness defence for the first time. However he couldn’t find a team-mate with his cut-back.
Mid-way through the first half Greg Stewart had Dundee’s best chance so far with a low angled shot that just missed Owain Fon-Williams’ left hand post.
The Dark Blues were building some momentum at last and Stewart had another opportunity a few minutes later, but couldn’t make a decent connection after a cross ball unexpectedly found its way past the Caley Thistle defenders.
Dundee threw everything at the visitors straight after the re-start and should have scored twice within the first five minutes of the second half.
First Stewart dragged a shot wide from close range, followed by Hemmings shooting straight at Fon-Williams from near the penalty spot.
Then there was the bizarre sight of the ICT keeper and team-mate Gary Warren colliding with each other outside of the box and both of them struggling to find their bearings and the ball. Fon-Williams eventually managed to flop on it before a Dundee player could get there first, and the danger was somehow averted.
Fon-Williams was now a busy man, and on the hour mark he saved a Rory Loy shot from an acute angle with his legs.
There would have been a spectacular equaliser on 70 minutes had Hemmings been able to keep his well struck left foot volley on target. Infact, it would have been a goal of the season contender.
Dundee certainly couldn’t say they didn’t have many chances. On 80 minutes Stewart only had the keeper to beat but struggled to get the ball under total control as he raced in on goal and then hit his shot straight at Fon-Williams.
Just when it looked like the hosts had contrived to find every way not to score, the leveller finally arrived when Harkins headed a corner back across goal and Hemmings finished it off from close range.
