Keeper Kyle Letheren has put his hands up and accepted blame for the bizarre own goal that dumped Dundee out of the William Hill Scottish Cup at Dens on Saturday.
The big Welsh stopper admits he should have played to the whistle and been alert to Gary Irvine’s pass back which instead trundled into the back of the net to give Raith Rovers the lead.
However, while the goalie and the rest of the Dark Blues players are desperately disappointed to be missing out on today’s fifth round draw, he believes the club can now fully concentrate on what has always been their No 1 priority this season, winning promotion.
He said: “You never want to go out of the cups but it might prove to be a blessing in disguise.
“Everybody loves a cup run and the possibility of getting one of the big teams like Celtic, but we will just pick ourselves up and go again in the league next week at Morton.”
Meanwhile, Raith skipper Jason Thomson, whose rampaging run had led directly to the own goal, admitted he could not wait for Monday’s Scottish Cup draw.
“We have a difficult game at Falkirk in the league next week but before that, we will look forward to seeing who we get in the draw on Monday.
“To be honest, I’m not fussed who we get but obviously we would prefer to be given a home draw.”
