Dundee’s Nick Ross is up for the cup

Dundee’s Nick Ross is up for the cup

He won the Scottish Cup with Inverness last season now Nick Ross is determined to help end Dundee’s long trophy drought.

The Dark Blues travel to face Dunfermline in the League Cup at East End Park tonight.

You have to go all the way back to 1973 in the same competition for Dundee’s last major honour triumph with a solitary Gordon Wallace strike being enough to beat Celtic in the final and Ross admits the club’s fans are well overdue another taste of silverware success.

He said: “My memories of the Scottish Cup win are still pretty fresh and all the celebrations after it.

“But that is gone now. I have left Inverness and I am a Dundee player now.

“If we can get through against Dunfermline then we could go on a good run as I believe we have the players to do that.“Dundee is such a big club, they are due some success.

“The fans turn up week in, week out and if we could do it for them, it would be a great achievement.

“We have a good chance this year as we have a strong squad.

“If we keep playing the way we can, there is no reason why not.

“Everyone always thinks Celtic is going to win it every year and you maybe want to avoid them if you can.

“But I think we have as good a chance as anyone.

“Obviously we have not won a trophy for a while but there is no pressure from the fans which is good.

“So if we can do it for them, it would be great.”

Ross decided to leave his home town club to come to Dundee in a bid to obtain regular football.

He has certainly achieved that aim and has played every minute of the Dark Blues’ five league games so far.

Ross smiled and said: “I have never played so many games before.

“Last season I was sitting on the bench and then coming on for five or 10 minutes.

“So to play every minute so far for Dundee has been great for me.

“I feel I am the fittest I have been for a long time playing a lot of games.

“When I spoke to the manager before coming to Dundee, he convinced me that I would be playing.

“That was the reason I signed here, to get regular games.

“When I arrived and I saw the squad and all the midfielders, I thought it would be tough to get into the team.

“However, I feel I have played well so far, I have kept my place and hopefully it continues.

“The only thing I am missing at the moment is a goal but I have come close a few times.

“I am getting in the box a lot more which is something I am trying to work on.

“The final touch is missing at the moment but I will get there.”

Dunfermline’s incredible winning start to the season came to a crashing halt at Peterhead on Saturday.

However, Ross is aware that the Pars will see Dundee as a big scalp and he and the rest of the team will have to give a Premiership level performance if they hope to go through to the next round.

He added: “Dunfermline have had a very good start to the season.

“They won 4-1, 5-1, 6-1 and then 7-1.

“We have watched videos of them and they look a good team going forward.

“They are the strongest team in that league and it will be a tough game.

“They will see us as a big scalp being a Premiership team.

“But if we pass the ball around the way we have done and take the chances we create, then we will be all right.”

Dundee will be without the injured Rory Loy, Kevin Thomson, Luka Tankulic and Nicky Low.
