Dundee v Dumbarton: Davidson suspension gives Hartley a headache

Kyle Benedictus is fighting to prove his fitness for Dundee's season decider.
Kyle Benedictus is fighting to prove his fitness for Dundee's season decider.

Dundee boss Paul Hartley has a big selection dilemma ahead of Saturday’s crunch clash with Dumbarton.

The Dark Blues are still buzzing following the dramatic events at the weekend which saw them beat Alloa while league leaders Hamilton were slumping to a devastating defeat against the Sons.

That put Dundee’s title destiny back in their own hands, but Hartley will be without Iain Davidson for the game against Dumbarton as the player who starred at the heart of the defence against the Wasps is suspended.

And the manager now has to decide whether to opt for Kyle Benedictus, who has just returned from injury, or on-loan Motherwell defender Adam Cummins for the big game.

Hartley said: “It just shows you what a difference a week can make in football. The lads are all in good spirits, that’s for sure.

“Kyle was back with the boys today but he needs to get a good week’s training under his belt to give himself a chance for Saturday. But so far he has had no reaction.

“I have a few options with Cummins as well. Davo will be a miss, that’s for sure. He has been excellent for us this season and it is just unfortunate what has happened with him picking up bookings.

“It takes him out of the equation and gives someone else an opportunity. There have been boys waiting on the sidelines. So it is unfortunate for him but fortunate for somebody else.”

There will obviously be plenty of hype and excitement before what is Dundee’s biggest game in their recent history.

However, Hartley was keen to stress that he is looking to keep his players as calm as possible despite the fact they are just 90 minutes away from going up to the Premiership.

He said: “We will prepare as usual with a normal week’s build-up and training. We look forward to the game and will obviously try to get the right result. If we do, we know what will happen. The game will take care of itself and the atmosphere will be terrific.

“We just need to keep the players focused, but there will also be plenty of rest and recovery. We are just fine tuning a couple of things and working on the team shape.

“It will be the same as we have done since we came in nothing will be different this week. We will try to keep the players as calm as possible, make sure they are totally focused on the game and not the rest of the stuff that surrounds it.

“It is a match we should all look forward to as a club.”
