Dundee’s Gary Irvine has candidly admitted that he has absolutely no idea how this “roller-coaster” season will end.
The Dark Blues surrendered pole position in the title race last week when they slumped to a disappointing defeat against relegated Morton, with Hamilton now leading the way by one point.
Everyone at Dens knows there is nothing they can do to stop Accies being crowned Championship winners if Alex Neil’s side are victorious in their last two matches.
However, Irvine feels that the only certain thing about the Championship this season has been the uncertainty.
He believes anything could happen over the next fortnight and it might yet be Dundee who travel to face Alloa this afternoon winning automatic promotion.
Irvine said: “It’s been a real roller-coaster. Everyone has been taking points off everyone else.
“To be honest, I wouldn’t know what the hardest position is to be in.
“Just when you get a bit of consistency, you get dealt a sucker-punch and then you have to pick yourself back up again.
“There have been so many changes throughout the season.
“It’s just been one of those seasons. One minute you’ve been up, and the next you’re down.
“You never know what’s going to happen next.”
He added: “It’s about taking it to the last game of the season. That’s all we can do.”
Irvine was suspended for the Cowdenbeath match two weeks ago, with his place in the side going to 18-year-old Cammy Kerr.
The youngster did enough to keep the jersey against Morton, with Irvine on the bench.
With so much at stake this afternoon, Hartley is likely to opt for the experienced campaigner but the 29-year-old is taking nothing for granted.
Irvine said: “Cammy has done well. I thought he was excellent two weeks ago. It’s up to the manager if he changes it.
“There’s a good healthy squad of players competing for places and that’s the way it’s been all season.”
Dundee will be without the injured Kyle Benedictus. Stephen O’Donnell returned to training this week but will not be considered for the game.
