Dundee midfielder Gary Harkins has spoken of his relief at securing the club’s first league win for four months.
The dramatic comeback victory over St Mirren on Wednesday night was the first time they had collected the full three-point haul since Hibs were beaten on November 17.
It has been a long wait for the supporters and Harkins confirmed the players were delighted to get that particular monkey off their backs.
“We were really poor in the first half but it was good to come back and win the game,” said Harkins. “The team hasn’t had a win in so long so it was just relief when the final whistle went.
“A result like that lifts the place, especially with the way we came back from a goal down. It’s good to see people with smiles on their faces.”
The 2-1 success was due, in no small part, to the heroics of goalkeeper Rab Douglas, who produced some excellent stops to thwart what was a rampant Buddies team in the first half, despite injuring his leg.
“Rab was absolutely brilliant,” acknowledged Harkins. “He made a couple of saves in the first half to keep us in the game. If he didn’t do that the game was over, simple as that.
“He was injured as well but that’s not a bad thing because he is better with one leg anyway! I don’t know why he even bothers to kick the ball because he is far better throwing it.
“He can throw it further than he can boot it he’s been kidding himself for years. He was brilliant, though, and deserves all the credit.”
Despite that midweek result, Dundee go into Saturday’s home clash with Inverness Caley Thistle still 14 points adrift at the bottom of the table.
If Harkins’ attitude is anything to go by, however, then they will keep fighting.
“We have nothing to lose at this stage,” he declared. “We have nine cup finals. Inverness are on a good run but we will just get in their faces and play the way we have been playing.”
