Kilmarnock 1 Dundee 2: Vote of confidence in John Brown’s leadership

Dundee defender Matt Lockwood says the new manager has instilled a will to win.

Dundee defender Matt Lockwood believes John Brown should be made permanent manager at Dens Park, and it should happen quickly.

Brown has proved he is the man to lead the Dark Blues into their next campaign, which will almost certainly be in the First Division, according to Lockwood.

And as far as he’s concerned, there’s no point in wasting any more time.

The Englishman, who starred in a 2-1 victory at Kilmarnock on Saturday, pointed out that Brown’s influence on the dressing room goes beyond the traditional new manager bounce.

He explained: “It always seems to be that when a new manager comes in results instantly pick up. Everyone tries to impress the new guy.

“But a lot of the time the honeymoon period wears off by this stage but it doesn’t seem to have done so here.

“John’s come in and instilled a will to win. When he speaks he’s passionate and hungry for success. I’m not saying Barry Smith wasn’t like that, but John’s done well and people respond to that.

“This was his second win and there’s definitely been an improvement. If he carries on doing that, regardless of whether we go down or not, it will give us confidence for next year.”

He added: “At the end of the day results speak for themselves two wins and a few draws. There has been an improvement.”

“Whatever the feelings were when he got the job, people have got to give him a chance.

“It wasn’t his fault the way it happened, and so far he’s done well. All the players like him. He’s got good personality in the dressing room and you know what he demands of you.

“If he gets the job then great, and he can build the squad that he wants.”

Lockwood does not see any logic in the Dundee board delaying a decision until the end of the season.

He said: “I don’t know if he (Brown) knows more than we do, but the sooner it gets sorted out the better.

“Whoever it is needs to plan for the future who is to be kept and who is to go.

“John’s blueprint was to assess the squad, and I think he’ll be the one to decide who stays and who goes.”
