Dundee and Dunfermline have been invited to an emergency meeting to push for an SPL2, it has emerged.
Hamilton Accies chairman Les Gray has arranged the get-together of selected Scottish League members, including Raith Rovers and Cowdenbeath, at New Douglas Park on Monday.
Accies have invited all current First Division members to the summit meeting at the stadium.
They have also asked Dundee, whose relegation from the top tier could be confirmed if they fail to beat St Mirren in Paisley on Saturday, to attend but it’s understood that Second Division champions Queen of the South will not be there. Dunfermline will be represented by administrator Bryan Jackson.
SFL Rule 12 states that: “No Member shall resign, retire or otherwise cease to be a member of the League unless it shall have given not less than two full seasons prior written notice so to do, unless with the approval of not less than two-thirds (66%) of the votes cast at a general meeting of the League.”
However, Rule 15.2 suggests that SFL clubs could quit at the drop of a hat if they are invited to leave by the SPL.
“Notwithstanding any other provision of these Rules, the membership of any football club promoted in accordance with Rule 92 (Champion Clubs Promotion and Relegation) to The Scottish Premier League (or otherwise admitted to The SPL), in accordance with the Rules of The SPL, shall automatically terminate upon the admission of such club to The SPL and such club shall not be obliged to give any notice of its cessation of membership of the League and shall be permitted to depart from the League and become a member of The Scottish Premier League (in accordance with the Rules of The SPL) without restriction.”
A number of First Division chairmen, and Dundee, have reacted with horror to Monday’s termination by St Mirren and Ross County of the 12-12-18 reconstruction plans which would have seen a greater proportion
of funding flow their way.
