Bold is beautiful as far as Dundee striker Steven Milne is concerned.
Since the winter break, manager Barry Smith has tried a new formation, which has won praise and points for the Dens Park club in their last two matches against Hibs and Kilmarnock.
Milne is one of three strikers John Baird and Mark Stewart are the others playing off targetman Colin Nish.
The ex-St Johnstone man is a fan of the set-up and he believes it can start bringing in points in threes rather than ones, starting at Tynecastle this evening.
“I’m really enjoying the new formation,” he said.
“I think the manager has signalled his intent and the players have liked it so far. We’ve got nothing to lose. We’ve got a bit of ground to make up on the teams immediately above us but, by being bold, hopefully we can do that.
“Against Hibs, we could have scored a few goals and the same was true of the Kilmarnock game on Sunday. We had chances to win, which unfortunately didn’t materialise, but we do feel as though as it’s coming.
“Hopefully it’s not too much longer in happening and obviously the Hearts game would be a great one for us to click.
“The bottom line is we’re creating chances and I think that’s got a lot to do with how we’ve set ourselves up recently.
“Colin Nish is a great target man and, with the support from the other three including myself, it can only be a good thing.”
Dundee are accentuating the positive regarding their back-to-back draws but the cold hard numbers tell them they haven’t actually made any progress in clawing back the gap above them.
Milne said: “We’ve played well and the fact we’re undefeated in the past two games is good for confidence but we need to start turning draws into wins.
“That would make a huge difference to our chances of staying up and that has got to be the aim from now on. It’s such a fine line in the SPL between getting the result you really want and ending up frustrated.
“We obviously do need to start putting the ball in the net, though, as that’s the key to getting victories.”
If Dundee could pick a team to play,it would be Hearts, as they have a played-two-won-two record against John McGlynn’s men.
Hearts, however, will be buoyed by their League Cup semi-final victory at the weekend.
Milne said: “They’ve just has a great result to get them into the League Cup final so all credit to them. But we have to focus solely on ourselves.
“We can take encouragement from the fact we’ve beaten them twice already this season, once at Dens and the other time at Tynecastle.
“So there’s nothing to be scared of. We know what we have to do and if we can get the right result hopefully we can kick on.
“Tynecastle is always a good place to go and play football and it’s one we’re really looking forward to.”
Smith has no fresh injury worries, and there was positive news yesterday on Mark Kerr, who had a tidy-up operation on his knee and hopes to be back in a few weeks.
Smith said: “It’s a positive for us that we won at Tynecastle and the boys will go there knowing we can win, but this is a totally different game.
”They’ve just got to the final of the League Cup. You’ve got to be a decent side to do that.”
