Defiant Dundee boss John Brown shrugged off criticism of his appointment as interim manager at Dens Park and insisted he is the right man to keep the Dark Blues in the SPL.
The 51-year-old was formally unveiled as Dundee’s new boss at a lunchtime press conference after a weekend that has seen many fans take to internet forums and football phone-ins to cast doubt on the appointment.
Despite the protests from some sections of supporters, ‘Bomber’ Brown today urged the fans to give him a chance and get behind the team against St Johnstone on Wednesday night.
“That’s the position we’re in the fans are unhappy and that all goes with the territory,” he said. “I’ve just got to take that on the chin. There’s a big gap but if we can start winning games we can move up the league.
“I want Dundee to be in the SPL next year, it’s as simple as that. Nothing’s up until it’s mathematically impossible. There are 33 points to play for and until then we carry on.
“Let’s start winning games it’s that mental barrier we need to get over.”
Chief executive Scot Gardiner stressed that the board of directors are 100% behind Brown, and maintained there had been no resignations from any of the five-man board.
“I know that John will do a fantastic job with this squad,” Gardiner added.
“We had a situation that had to be dealt with and it would be unfair on the Dundee support, the Dundee players and staff if we didn’t still try and go for it between now and the end of the season.
“The board is right behind John and we believe that John is the right man for right now.”
