Dundee United captain Sean Dillon believes Johnny Russell will take it all in his stride if given the chance by Scotland.
The former Tannadice frontman’s form for Derby County has earned him a call-up for the crucial Euro qualifier against the Republic of Ireland on Friday and next week’s friendly against England, both at Celtic Park.
Irishman Dillon, who will be in the away end at Parkhead with his father supporting his own country, will be delighted for his old clubmate if he sees Russell in action.
And he thinks Scots boss Gordon Strachan should have no worries about Russell getting nervous if he does get game time.
“I am delighted for Johnny getting his call-up and it has only been a matter of time given his form down at Derby,” said Dillon.
“I am sure he’s going to have a long and successful Scotland career but I’m going to the game on Friday night with my dad so I hope he doesn’t score!
“He is a quality player, someone who can conjure up a goal out of nothing. He is also a big-game player so I don’t think it would bother him one bit if he gets on the park.
“He would make an impact if he comes on because he offers something different.
“Look at his goal for us in the derby against Dundee a couple of years ago (an incredible left-shot after running from the halfway line in United’s 3-0 win at Tannadice).
“In that game we broke away and within seconds he had the ball in the net. That was a big game, big crowd and live on the television that’s the kind of stage he thrives on.
“He has the ability to create something from nothing and that’s priceless. For any manager, having a player who is able to create a goal out of the slightest chance is massive.
“Johnny is a confident fella, he’s upbeat and always in good form. So he’ll be a good addition to the Scotland squad and the lads will love having him around.
“He’s great to play with and great to have about the place because he enjoys his football so much.”
For Dillon, it will be a rare chance to be a supporter on Friday and he is looking forward to what should be a great occasion.
“I have spoken to a few of my mates and some of them are coming over for the match,” said the Tangerines defender.
“Everyone is looking forward to it and I can’t wait to go to a game with my dad as a fan.
“I never get the chance to do it these days with playing myself, so it’s something to look forward to.”
