2 Aberdeen 0-3 United. League Cup semi-final, second leg, Pittodrie Wednesday, October 28, 1981.
This is arguably United’s greatest-ever performance at Pittodrie and was a tactical master-class from Jim McLean that left managerial friend and rival Alex Ferguson in the shade.
Trailing 1-0 from the first leg at Tannadice, a wonder strike from Sturrock levelled things up on aggregate after just seven minutes.
Ralph Milne made it 2-0 on the night on 38 minutes before Luggy fired into the roof of the Dons’ net with just seven minutes left to send the Tangerines though to their third successive League Cup final, which they would lose to Rangers.

This was a massive turning point in United’s title-winning season and it was a must-win game.
They were on a bit of a downer going into the fixture having been knocked out of the UEFA Cup in midweek by Bohemians Prague while, by contrast, Aberdeen were still basking in the glory of their European Cup Winners’ Cup quarter-final win over Bayern Munich.
This match turned into the Ralph Milne show as the flying winger scored twice in the first half to stun the home team.
Gordon Strachan got one back for the Dons from the penalty spot but United held on and would go on to be champions of Scotland.

The two sides had fought out a 1-1 draw at the national stadium just three days earlier but the Tangerines, playing in their infamous marbled strips, would edge it this time.
With extra-time looming, Andy McLaren pinged the ball upfield to Craig Brewster. His cross from the right reached Dave Bowman, whose shot was parried by Dons keeper Theo Snelders.
The loose ball threatened to run behind Jim McInally but the midfielder somehow managed to hook it into the net to send United through to the final, where they would win the Scottish Cup for the first time by beating double-treble-chasing Rangers.

Swedish striker Kjell Olofsson got things going after 17 minutes, then his compatriot Lars Zetterlund made it 2-0 just a minute later.
Andy McLaren gave the scoresheet a Scottish flavour on 21 minutes as the hosts ran riot.
The other two goals came late on, with Olofsson adding his second on 83 then Craig Easton rounding it off with a fifth goal three minutes from time.

In front of an expectant 16,500 home crowd on the first day of the SPFL season, Aberdeen were once again at the wrong end of United’s favourite Pittodrie scoreline.
Jackie McNamara’s men took the lead through Ryan Dow on 29 minutes then Gary Mackay-Steven made it two just before half-time.
Chris Erskine wrapped things up in the final minute to get the new campaign off to a brilliant start.
