Hibernian 1 Dundee United 3: Missed penalties leave McNamara wary
ByIan Roache
Dundee United manager Jackie McNamara joked that he was glad his team didn’t get a third penalty after missing two in a remarkable game at Easter Road.
The Tangerines beat Hibs 3-1 thanks to goals from Nadir Ciftci, Gavin Gunning and Farid El Alagui, with Jordon Foster on the mark for the home team.
However, that only told half the story of a game that saw both Ciftci and Gary Mackay-Steven produce shocking penalty misses and the Hibees lose Tom Taiwo to a red card late in the match.
Also, the visitors should have had a third penalty when John Rankin was felled.
This victory, United’s fourth on the bounce, moved them back ahead of Inverness Caley Thistleand keeps the pressure on third-top Motherwell, currently sitting in the Europa League slot.
Commenting on the Rankin incident, the manager said: “I am glad we didn’t get that one because we probably would have missed!”
