Charlie Telfer says he and Dundee United will be a perfect match after agreeing a three-year deal with the Tangerines.
The 18-year-old attacking midfielder has put a decade at Rangers behind him to further his career at Tannadice.
Despite the LightBlues’ well-documented difficulties, it is still something of a coup for United to have persuaded such a promising young player to make the switch from one of the Old Firm.
Telfer confirmed the decision had been taken for the best of reasons to improve himself as a player.
The Scotland under-19 international feels he will be an ideal fit for the club and vice-versa.
He said: “United received a lot of praise for their football last season and it was deserved as it is very easy on the eye.
“I like to get the ball down and play and this is the ideal place for that.I believe I am ready to play in the first team but I have to show the manager that is the case.
“I cannot wait to meet my new team mates and start pre-season.
“I have watched how the younger players at United are allowed to develop in the first team and that has been a big reason in my decision to join the club.
“The opportunity to play in the Scottish Premiership next season was also something I could not turn down.
“When I met the manager and saw the facilities that are available at St Andrews, I knew that I could further my football development at United.”
His new boss Jackie McNamara, who will welcome Telfer and his new teammates back for pre-season training on June 30, was understandably delighted to have snapped up the player widely regarded as being the best at Ibrox in his age group.
He agreed with Telfer that club and player will suit one another.
McNamara said, “Charlie is a very gifted footballer with great awareness and has excellent delivery from set-pieces.His style of football will settle in perfectly with the rest of the young talent we are currently producing at the club.
“He is a sensible, level-headed young man who wants to play for Dundee United and I am delighted that we have secured his services for the next three years.”
The Tangerines will have to pay a compensation fee to Rangers for their development of Telfer.
The clubs have three weeks in which to reach agreement on a figure before it goes to an independent tribunal but there is still some distance between both parties.
Meanwhile, United remain on course to land Queen’s Park youngster Blair Spittal.
Player and club have agreed terms and the Tangerines lead the race for his signature, although city neighbours Dundee have also made an offer to the midfielder.
