Brian Graham has vowed not to become Dundee United’s forgotten man amid fierce competition for attacking places at Tannadice.
Reflecting on long periods kicking his heels on the bench last season, the former Raith Rovers man admits aspects of his first campaign in Tayside were “annoying”.
However, Graham, 25, was a standout performer during United’s training camp in Holland, scoring three goals in as many matches despite being used as a substitute against Utrecht and NAC Breda.
He intends to show manager Jackie McNamara that he deserves to spearhead the Tangerines’ attack despite the challenge of Nadir Ciftci, Ryan Dow and new arrival Mario Bilate.
The rangy frontman said: “It’s been a great pre-season for me but, as always, the bottom line is always about trying to get fit. It’s pleasing for me to get amongst the goals, I’m a striker and that’s what I’m judged on.
“My aim was always to come to Holland and score a few and I’ve done that. I am honest enough to know I didn’t really play that much [last season].
“I spoke to the manager at the end of last season and I told him I would make sure I came back after the close season and hit the ground running.
“We had a heart to heart about things and he promised me that if I came back fit then I would get my chance and that’s what’s happened.
“I did exactly the same as I did the previous summer, I was out pounding roads and working hard. I always come back in good shape as I know the rewards are there.”
Graham started just 13 games for United last term. Despite that, he netted seven times and occasionally showed glimpses of the prolific form that saw him become such a hit at Stark’s Park.
Now in his second season in top-flight football, nothing less than regular appearances will satisfy.
The former Morton and East Stirlingshire man continued: “Overall I did well but I just didn’t play a big enough part in things and that’s what annoyed me.
“I felt I had a good season, my goals-to-game ratio was in the top 20 of Premiership strikers so I was pleased enough with that.
“But this year I know I need to start more games, play more and show myself. It’s a big season for me. We have welcomed Mario [Bilate] as we know a club like Dundee United isn’t only going to go with just two strikers.
“Mario’s a welcome addition and we need to be on our toes every day in training and, when you get your chance on a Saturday, you need to take it.
“All I can do is keep working hard and make sure the manager can’t leave me out of his starting eleven.”
With worthwhile trips to Ireland and Holland under their belts, Graham has seen an immediate rapport built among the squad.
He believes that will be pivotal ahead of United’s season opener against Aberdeen on August 9.
Graham added: “We had nine new faces last year in pre-season and I think that showed in the first few games. We have also brought a few guys in this summer but they have fitted in particularly well.
“They have adapted quickly so we are now looking forward to going to Pittodrie for the first game of the season. We are all fit and raring to go.”
