Dundee United full-back Andrew Robertson will be supported by his very own Tartan Army as he bids to make his Scotland debut.
The Tannadice defender is preparing to fly out with the Scots squad for the friendly against Poland in Warsaw on Wednesday night.
It is his first inclusion in Gordon Strachan’s squad so there could still be some unfamiliar faces around but that’s not a problem for Robertson, signed from Queen’s Park last summer.
For the 19-year-old will not be short of fans if, or hopefully when, he trots out onto the park wearing the new pink and yellow Scotland away strip.
“There are six members of the family going over, which is ridiculous!” confirmed a smiling Robertson. My mum, my dad, my brother, my uncle and my other aunt and uncle will all be there. They are nuts and are just going for the day.
“I think they are buzzing about the call-up and don’t want to miss out in case I do play a part.
“If I don’t then they’ve not lost out because they will have had a wee holiday. If I did play and they were not there then they wouldn’t be happy.
“You see, playing for Scotland would mean a lot to me but also to my family.
“Every kid wants to play for their country. Most boys want to be a footballer and I’m lucky enough to be one. Hopefully, I can be a Scotland internationalist too.
“We are all big fans and probably my first Scotland memory was when my auntie had a big party for the opening game of the 1998 World Cup against Brazil.
“I vaguely remember it even though I must have only been about four. I think I recall more about the actual party than the match but I’ve obviously been to a fair few Scotland games since then.”
Robertson heads off on international duty on a real high thanks to United’s action-packed 3-1 win over Hibs at Easter Road on Friday night.
He played the ball across for Farid El Alagui’s goal that finished off the scoring and he said: “It is great to go into the Scotland squad on the back of that.
“All last week I was just concentrating on the Hibs game. I couldn’t afford to look too far forward but now it’s out of the way and we got a great result at a tough place.
“The way things are going for me, maybe I will have to pinch myself at the end of the season but you can’t look back on anything just now.
“We’ve still got aspirations of pushing up that league and we’re going well in the Scottish Cup. Maybe at the end of the season I’ll look back and say ‘well done’ but not just now.”
Robertson would love to start in Warsaw but he insisted he will be happy just to get any kind of game time. It wouldn’t matter to me if it’s just five minutes at the end,” he said.
“I’m still 19 with a career ahead of me. Hopefully, I’m pushing to start later in my career. If I get any game-time on Wednesday I’ll be happy.”
