John Souttar: choosing to stay put.

Dundee United’s John Souttar has decided to reject the advances of English Premier League side Sunderland to remain at Tannadice.

The 17-year-old is one of the Tangerines’ brightest talents and had been the subject of two bids from the Black Cats, the second of which believed to be in the region of £600,000 was deemed acceptable by United.

However, the ball was left in the player’s court and he recently travelled down to the Stadium of Light to have a look round the facilities there and to meet Sunderland officials.

Souttar, a product of United’s youth system, weighed up the potential move to Wearside with his family but has now decided to remain on Tayside to continue his footballing education.

Courier Sport understands United will sit down soon to hold talks with the Scotland Under-19 defender and his representatives with a view to persuading him to extend his contract past his current deal which is set to end in 2016.

Souttar’s decision to remain at Tannadice will obviously delight boss Jackie McNamara, who previously stated: “My advice to him would be to stay here and play football.

“We’re not standing in the way of any young player who wants to further their career but I’ve spoken with John and told him we’re here to help him.

“It’s all about seeing what’s best for his progression like staying here and playing 150 to 200 first-team games.”

Souttar, who has attracted other interest from a host of top-flight English clubs, has appeared seven times so far for United this season, most recently on Saturday against St Mirren, producing another polished performance that belied his tender years.
