Dundee United boss Jackie McNamara believes Aidan Connolly can be the next youngster to make the breakthrough at Tannadice.
The 18-year-old winger came off the bench in last Friday night’s 3-1 win over Motherwell, which kept the Tangerines in the hunt for a European place.
Connolly joined United along with left-back Andrew Robertson from Queen’s Park in the summer. The son of ex-United striker Paddy Connolly, has had to be more patient than Robertson for a first team chance.
But McNamara felt it was the right time to reward his hard work on the training ground.
The United boss, who has just signed an extended deal to stay in charge until May 2017, said: “It was good to give Aidan a run-out against Motherwell.
“I wanted to give him a wee taste for it because he deserves it and it will help him in the long-run.
“We’re a club that gives young player an opportunity as we’ve shown this season. I’m sure Aidan will want to get more involved in the future and that’s the whole point of having young guys here. His attitude is terrific.
“He wants to be the best he can be and knowing him he’ll work very hard to achieve that.”
Meanwhile, United are still waiting to hear if central defender Gavin Gunning will be leaving in the summer.
The Irish defender returned from injury to the top team against Motherwell and made his mark with two goals.
McNamara said: “Nothing has changed. The ball in is Gavin’s court and we’ve spoken to his agent. I can fully understand his position as he’s a free agent in the summer and is entitled to weigh up his options.”
