Dundee United v Motherwell: Nadir Ciftci suited to Scottish game

Nadir Ciftci has been tipped to shine.
Nadir Ciftci has been tipped to shine.

Dundee United striker Nadir Ciftci is ahead of the game when it comes to settling into Scottish football.

That is the view of his manager Jackie McNamara, who has watched the Dutch-born Turk quickly become popular with the United fans and a nightmare for opposition defenders.

Ciftci certainly made life difficult for Ross County last weekend, grabbing a goal and helping to create numerous chances for his team-mates.

That dynamic display should see him retain his starting spot for the visit of Motherwell to Tannadice on Sunday.

McNamara said: “Nadir has settled in well because whenever you go to a new club it usually takes a bit of time. But I think you can see that Nadir has taken to things well and Scottish football seems to suit him.

“Even during pre-season, you could see in wee glimpses that he had something to offer us and that’s why we signed him. He is exceptionally strong, skilful and his hold-up play is good.

“As a former defender, he is probably someone I wouldn’t have relished playing against so he has a lot going for him and has some pace as well as a tremendous strike.”

Ciftci was just one of several success stories as United ran riot at Dingwall, scything open the Staggies at times. So it will be a confident Tangerines team that runs out to face the Steelmen.

McNamara said: “I think we’re getting there. The team is gelling gradually. You could pick holes in any side but we’re pleased with the way things are going.

“There were a lot of positives to take from the Ross County game, which we can hopefully take into Sunday’s match.”
