For many observers, Dundee United manager Jackie McNamara’s decision to drop David Goodwillie against Ross County for 17-year-old Ryan Gauld was seen as a big gamble.
However, it was a decision that paid off in spades with the teenager producing a goal-scoring man-of-the-match performance to help his side to a thrilling 4-2 victory.
The County rearguard were ruthlessly exposed by United’s attacking flair, with Gauld, Stuart Armstrong, Gary Mackay-Steven and Nadir Ciftci running riot.
The Tangerines scored three first-half goals and added another in the second before County put a bit of respectability on the scoreline with two late counters.
Gauld is now looking to nail down a place in McNamara’s starting XI.
The youngster said: “We have been performing well for a few weeks but not really getting the goals we deserve so it was good to come up here and get four. Hopefully that can push us on a bit.
“I’m a wee bit annoyed with myself that I didn’t score more than one as I had a few chances. But I am happy that I got another goal. But, most importantly, the team got a win which is what really matters.
“I was just delighted to get my chance. Obviously, if I’m coming in, that means somebody has to miss out. But I thought that when Goodie came on he did well for the team.
“I just try to enjoy it when I’m playing. That’s the most important thing.”
Gauld added: “If you enjoy it, the chances are you are going to play better, so that’s my aim.
“I am happy to play anywhere, but if I had a preference it would be just off the main striker as you get a lot of the ball in there.”
He continued: “Hopefully I can get in the starting XI most weeks and score more goals.
“There is a lot of competition up front so you just have to ensure you work hard when you get in.”
A delighted McNamara paid tribute to his side’s performance and that of Gauld in particular.
He said: “I thought we were good and looked dangerous. The side is getting better with the pace and strength they have got.
“Young Gauld is on a different level. He is only 17 but, for me, his touch, his awareness and his ability is fantastic.
“The first question I got today was about Goodwillie but I thought Ryan and Nadir answered that and showed they were ready.”
