Scotland boss Gordon Strachan has revealed that Andrew Robertson was on his radar from the opening day of the season.
The Dundee United left-back has been called up by the national coach for the first time and is poised to make his senior debut against Poland in Warsaw on March 5.
Robertson had been consistently excellent for the Tangerines this campaign but Strachan admitted that he knew from day one that the former Queen’s Park youngster had “something”.
For the Scots boss was in the stand for the very first fixture of the new Scottish Premiership United’s Friday night goalless draw against Partick Thistle at Firhill on August 2 and he liked what he saw.
Speaking at the unveiling of his squad for the Polish friendly, Strachan said: “I saw him in the first game of the season against Partick Thistle.
“I thought, ‘You’ve got something. You are a bit raw need to learn one or two things’.”
“So we have kept an eye on him since then. He also joined us in training a couple of months back and we like him.
“He deserves it. He got his move to Dundee United and has been consistent for seven months.”
There could be further good news for United on the international front, with central defender Curtis Good set to get called up by World Cup-bound Australia.
Good has fitted nicely into the Tangerines’ side since his loan move from Newcastle last month and his fine form is about to be rewarded by the Socceroos.
They have a friendly against Ecuador at Millwall’s ground The Den in London on March 5 -the same night that Robertson will hopefully be making his debut in dark blue.
Aussie coach Ange Postecoglou will hold a training camp in the run-up to the game and it is understood he wants Good to be involved.
While they were celebrating at Tannadice, though, there wasn’t any good Scotland news for St Johnstone as striker Stevie May was overlooked once again by Strachan despite his 21 goals for Saints so far this season
