Dundee United chairman Stephen Thompson is confident that a 42-club solution will be found to bring a positive end to Scottish football’s reconstruction saga.
With the SPL teams and 10 First Division clubs backing change but the required majority of SFL teams failing to do so, it looked set to be a summer shambles for the game. with a breakaway second tier looking a certainty.
However, a voice of optimism emerged from within Tannadice last night as Thompson indicated that all may not be not lost in the quest to find a resolution.
He said: “The 42-club solution is still very much on the table and I am still very hopeful that will be in place by the end of June.
“I am optimistic. There has been a lot going on (behind the scenes). The SFL have a vote on June 10 and we will just wait to see what that brings.
“It has been pretty clear that the SPL clubs are together on this now and it is up to the SFL clubs what they want to do.
“As regards Scottish football as a whole, all we have done for the last 16, 17 months is talk about stuff other than the actual game,” said Thompson.
“It has all been about administrations and reconstructions. I think the product has suffered because of that.
“There has been so much negativity around that the product has been damaged. So I think the proposed changes will bring a freshness to the whole set-up.
“It will be rebranded and play-offs will be in place, which will be exciting. There will be one league body, an all-through distribution model and a pyramid system.”
