A transfer to Italy may be right for Johnny Russell’s agent, according to former Dundee United legend Christian Dailly, but not for the player.
United confirmed they have rejected two bids from Italian Serie A club Catania but feel their young striker’s representative is “intent on forcing a transfer”.
At the same age as Russell, Scotland Hall of Famer Dailly decided to move on from United, and he too had a tempting offer from Italy.
He made sure he weighed up all his options before ultimately opting for Derby County, and Dailly has encouraged Russell not to be hasty.
Dailly said: “In an ideal world, he’ll get the move he wants, United will get the fee they think he’s worth and they’ll part on good terms. It doesn’t always work that way though.
“Unfortunately, when agents get involved it can often spoil things. The agent will have his contacts in Italy and will make sure he gets his cut.
“But my advice to Johnny would be forget what your agent says and make sure the move is right for you.”
Dailly went on: “It may well be that this is the best move for him and his career, but if a fee is agreed he should go out there himself, take a good look at the club and the local area, speak to football people he trusts, weigh up all his options, and then make his mind up.”
“If he makes the wrong move it could be the start of his career going the wrong way. The decision is that important.”
Dailly added: “If an agent is telling you to go somewhere you have to be absolutely sure about it yourself. Hopefully Johnny will do his research for himself and make the right decision for himself.”
