Dundee United’s Mark Millar has tipped team-mate Gary Mackay-Steven to be a big hit if he is handed his Scotland debut against Wales at Hampden.
The mercurial winger’s performances this season have lit up Scottish football and earned him a call-up for the World Cup qualifier from new Scotland boss Gordon Strachan in what will be his first competitive match in charge.
It is unlikely that GMS will be thrown in at the deep end against the Welsh but if he is, Millar insists he will swim not sink.
He said: “We all know how good Gaz is and we were all delighted for him when he got the call-up.
“Hopefully, if he gets a chance, he can show everyone what he can do. He has been terrific for us this season and some of the things he does with the ball are unbelievable.
“So it is brilliant for him and his family that he is in the squad. We are also really proud of him and want him to do well. He is fairly quiet but he is a confident lad and he believes in his own ability.
“If he does get his chance, I am sure he will do really well. It wouldn’t faze Gaz in the slightest and he will be looking to go on and impress. Hopefully he does that.”
Millar and the rest of his United team-mates are set to have a few days off over the international break.
However, the midfielder who signed from Falkirk last summer, insists he will not be putting his feet up as he looks to finally cement a place in Jackie McNamara’s starting XI.
He said: “I think the manager is going to give us a few days off but I intend to continue to work by myself.
“Sunday’s game against Dundee was my first 90 minutes since we played Kilmarnock away. The derby was my first full game on the park for the new manager so I will just keep myself ticking over during the break and come back in good shape.
“With John Rankin and Willo Flood being suspended, I got my chance to play and hopefully I have done enough to keep my place.
“So I will just have to work hard to keep my sharpness and fitness up and maybe give the manager a selection headache.”
