Hitman Johnny Russell is on a deadly run of form and says it is largely thanks to the “ammunition” he is being supplied with.
The striker took his goals tally for the season to 19, with what turned out to be the winning goal against Motherwell at Fir Park on Tuesday night.
His counter put the icing on the cake of a devastating break and 60-yard gallop by Gary Mackay-Steven, with the 22-year-old supplying a killer pass for Russell to take in his stride and calmly slot past Darren Randolph for his fifth goal in four games.
And the front man lavished praise on the wing wizard and his incredible bag of tricks.
He said: “It is a good wee scoring run I have got going and we have had some great results as well and, hopefully, we can keep it going.
“I can’t help but continue to blow Gaz’s trumpet. He is incredible and you want to watch football because of players like him.
“The fact he does it week in, week out is amazing and it is a pleasure to watch. Sometimes you actually get caught up in watching him in the game.
“He showed great strength and pace to get into that position for my goal and his through ball was perfect, leaving me with very little to do.
“I just took one touch, then tried to get my shot away and thankfully I finished it.”
United boss Jackie McNamara employed Russell’s usual strike partner skipper Jon Daly at centre-half on Tuesday with the youngster on his own up front.
However, the 22-year-old insists that didn’t mean a change of game plan.
He added: “We always like to get the ball down and play but obviously Jon has a bit more aerial presence than me.
“So maybe from crosses we have to be a little bit smarter but I think overall, the game plan is still the same.”
Beating second top Motherwell on their own patch was a superb result for United, especially considering they had been thumped 6-2 last weekend by Celtic.
However, Russell insists the players are now fully focused on Sunday’s match with Hibs.
He said: “The result was massive. We knew we had to go to Motherwell and get a result and we need to take that into Sunday against Hibs and then the following week.
“But we are just taking it one game at a time. We have got a great result against Motherwell but it is all about Hibs on Sunday.”
