Delighted Saints manager Tommy Wright felt his players’ European endeavours had given his team a decisive edge in their win against Ross County.
“We looked fresh and we had four competitive games in Europe. I felt that gave us an advantage because we were ahead in terms of sharpness.
“We had a couple of scares in the first half and at 2-1 you can never be comfortable, but keeper Alan Mannus didn’t have any real saves to make after their goal.
“We controlled large parts of the game.”
Wright flagged-up the contribution made by teenage midfield prospect Scott Brown, who played a role in both Perth goals.
“Scott is like a quarterback switching play from side to side and making openings for people.
“He is young and there is room for improvement. Scott knows playing like that he will have a big part this season.”
The McDiarmid manager, who now turns his thoughts to Wednesday’s home clash with champions Celtic, is confident there are goals in his squad.
But he added that he is looking to bring in another striker after Stevie May’s departure.
Staggies boss Derek Adams was pleased with his team’s display despite losing out in their first home league game.
He said: “St Johnstone came up here and did a job but we probably deserved a draw. I thought we played well and created a lot of chances.
“We also hit the bar a couple of times and their keeper had some really good saves. It is always disappointing to lose any game but overall I was delighted with the performance.”
County now play Partick Thistle in Glasgow on Wednesday before welcoming Kilmarnock to Dingwall on Saturday.
