St Johnstone will consider leaving James McFadden out of their team at Kilmarnock on Saturday.
The former Motherwell man is in form and fully fit.
But McFadden has a history of knee problems and a decision will have to be made whether it’s too much of a risk to play him on Rugby Park’s artificial pitch.
Manager Tommy Wright stood the forward down at Dens Park recently as a precaution, and the same could happen at the weekend.
Assistant manager Callum Davidson explained: “We will train on the new astro on Friday. We won’t overdo it. But we haven’t trained on it with Faddy so far and we want the lads to get used to it.
“We will assess things with the player and Michael McBride, the physio.
“They will all want to play but towards the end of my playing career I probably wouldn’t have been able to play there because I would have damaged my back on the artificial surface.
“People will have to make a sensible decision.
“We want to win the game but it is a long season and we have players back fit to give us options.
“Murray (Davidson) and Frazer (Wrigh) will be fine. James we will need to have a look at because of his knee. James will have a say and Michael always has a big input but ultimately the call will be made by the manager.
“If it could put him out for a couple of weeks by playing on that surface it would be a decision we will have to make after weighing up all the information from every angle.”
Davidson admits he’s a traditionalist when it comes to playing surfaces.
“I am disappointed there’s astro in the Premiership,” he pointed out.
“I understand why clubs put it in and Allan Johnston loves it. He says he has a problem with grass now! You get used to any surface but when you are only playing on it once or twice it is an issue. I’m just not a fan of it in the top league.”
