St Johnstone manager Tommy Wright hopes Saturday’s Scottish Cup win proves the Perth club can notch goals from all areas of the pitch.
Heading into the Tayside derby against Dundee United, the Saints boss says he was delighted to see a defender, a midfielder and a forward find the net in the victory over Raith at the weekend.
Top scorer Stevie May did the damage when Saints last met United on December 29, scoring all three in a 3-0 win at McDiarmid Park, although Wright knows other outfield players need to chip in their fair share if they are to secure a top six spot.
“It was good to see Gary McDonald and Steven Anderson on the scoresheet at the weekend because we have been emphasising to the players they can’t keep relying on Stevie May to come up with the goals,” he said.
“The burden has to be spread. Nigel Hasselbaink also took his goal really well and he should be producing those sort of runs more often given his ability.
“Ando has probably been our biggest culprit when it comes to passing up set-play chances, so it will be great for his confidence scoring the third. He got a lovely touch to it after attacking the front post.
“That was his first of the season and ironically it wasn’t with a header. He could have had three or four to his name.
“But hopefully there are more to come now.”
Striker Steven MacLean will miss the Tannadice clash through suspension, although Saints should have no other fresh injury concerns.
