Tommy Wright will need no persuading to sign a new long-term contract with St Johnstone.
The Perth boss, who masterminded Saints’ historic first ever Scottish Cup victory at the weekend, has one year left on his deal.
Chairman Steve Brown intimated he would look to sit down with the Northern Irishman in the near future and sort out an extension, and Wright confirmed that will happen.
“My contract is up for review at the end of the month,” Wright revealed. “I’m more than happy to stay here as long as possible.
“I’ve read the chairman’s quotes and he’s brilliant he’s selling me and keeping me at the same time! I’m genuine in what I’ve said, if I’m still St Johnstone manager in 10 years’ time I’ll be happy.
“Nobody knows in football what’s going to happen three years ago I was still at Distillery and now I’m here. I could have been looking for a job last summer but in the end I got the job here.
“It turns so quickly in this game but I’m happy here and am ready to sign a contract for as long as possible. I’ve settled here, my wife Ann has been over more this season.
“We’re looking to put our house back home on the market. It will be nice for Ann to move over here and that’s her plan.”
Most St Johnstone fans, certainly those over the age of 50, would rate Willie Ormond as the greatest manager the club has ever had.
Wright – after just one season in charge – has now surpassed his achievements.
“It’s very flattering to be compared to someone like Willie Ormond, “ Wright said.
“He’s huge here, we’ve got a stand named after him, so to be mentioned in the same breath as one of the great Scottish manager is very humbling.”
May 17 is the date that everybody connected with St Johnstone will remember every year, but May 18 wasm’t too bad either.
“It’s only just sinking in now really,” Wright said. “The parade was something special and it was just the perfect day really.
“The bus tour was long but there were people out on the streets right the way through and I just couldn’t believe it when we got to the High Street.
“When we turned the corner and saw that many people I got emotional. I wasn’t the only one. It was just amazing. The sun was out and that just made it perfect.
“The lads loved it, that’s what the magic of the cup is all about. This is a family club and it means so much to so many people. I’m just delighted for Steve and Geoff Brown.”
Meanwhile, Wright will get back to the business of speaking to out of contract players at the club and bringing in some others.
The James Dunne situation though is out of their hands, for the time being at least.
Wright reported: “Stevenage have an option on James so we’ll have to wait and see if they take that up. He wants to stay here, he’s enjoyed it and been a big influence for us.
“He’s been really good for us. I want to keep him but there’s nothing we can do at the moment. I think they will take up the option on him so it might have to be another loan deal.
“We’ll see what happens and then look at it but I want him here for next season.”
Stevenage have confirmed that they have indeed taken up the one year option on Dunne.
