St Johnstone v FC Luzern: Saints’ set-piece threat worries Swiss side
ByIan Roache
Luzern have admitted they are worried about the damage St Johnstone can do from corners.
Steven Maclean’s strike in the Swissporarena came in the aftermath of a set-piece and it was the same story when Luzern played Sion in their first league match of the season on Sunday.
Assistant manager Thomas Wyss admits his team have to tighten up if they are to have any chance of stopping Saints scoring.
“Both goals against us in the first two games have come from corner kicks, so we need to be better at defending them,” admitted Wyss.
“Our standards have to be higher, at both ends of the field. It’s quite a challenge against St Johnstone.
“They are the Scottish Cup winners and Scotland is a traditional football country so it’s not easy to go and be successful there.”
However, team manager Carlos Bernegger thinks Luzern hold the technical advantage over Saints.
He said: “We know how powerfully St Johnstone can play. They are maybe not so technical but like all Scottish teams they will never give up. It will be a very balanced game.”
