Adam Morgan has told St Johnstone fans the best is yet to come from him as he prepares to meet manager Tommy Wright’s challenge.
After the news broke earlier this week that striker Steven MacLean would be out for at least four months with a knee injury, Wright urged the on-loan Yeovil Town man to grab his chance to shine.
The former Liverpool player admits he has not exactly hit the ground running since joining the McDiarmid men but he insists he will get there.
Saints travel north to take on Inverness Caley Thistle today and Morgan will attempt to ease the pain of MacLean’s absence with a goal or two.
“It is unfortunate for Macca because he is a great player who has made a great start to the season,” said Morgan.
“He is someone whom I have watched in training, looking to take aspects of his game and approach on board.
“Macca caught my eye straight away as a player to look up to. I remember having a chat with my dad and we agreed about how he is a proper striker.
“He is someone I respect and admire, both as a player and as a person. These things do happen in football but I am sure that he will come back stronger.
“I am also hopeful that myself and Brian Graham can score a few goals in the meantime. It is a challenge for me but I am relishing it.
“I have been finding my feet at the club and have only made one start and two sub appearances.
“It is not that I’m not trying my best, it’s just that I haven’t played 90 minutes in over a year.
“Now I feel sharper, am ready and am looking to score goals for St Johnstone.”
Asked if he has a lot more to offer Saints once he gets up to speed, Morgan replied: “Absolutely 100% correct. I couldn’t stress that enough.
“There have been people on Twitter having a go at me but I have faith in my own ability.
“You need a run of games behind you if you are to do well. I am not too worried at the moment. Indeed, I am completely confident that it will change for me.
“What you need is one goal to get things going, whether it be a 25-yarder or one that goes in off my bum!”
Although an admirer of MacLean’s, Morgan insisted they were different types of striker and the same goes for him and fellow frontman Graham.
“I am not the biggest lad although I’m not small either and my game is about quick passes and movement.
“Macca is bigger and stronger maybe. I could also see myself playing with Brian because he is another lad who I notice has a lot of quality.
“I am really looking forward to playing with him if the opportunity arises.
“I would prefer to play as a two but am happy with whatever the manager decides to do because the main thing is getting some game time.
“I want people to see me do well.”
Morgan dismissed the notion that he still has stars in his eyes after coming through the ranks at Anfield, the home of his boyhood heroes.
“All I wanted to do when i was growing up was play for Liverpool. I wanted to play alongside Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge.
“You get signed and say that you are playing for Liverpool but you are not really. You are not in the first team and I think I played more under-21 games than anyone else.
“Everyone has to work out how to get where they want to be. I am still a young lad and am not even 21 till next year.
“I want to be back in the Premier League in England one day and I would love nothing more to sign back for Liverpool but it’s still the early stage of my career and I am ready to do well for St Johnstone.”
