St Johnstone boss Tommy Wright admits that despite missing out on signing target Danny Swanson, he is still more than happy with the squad at his disposal.
The McDiarmid manager had been hopeful that the club would be able to lure the winger back to Perth again on loan after his successful spell with Saints last season.
However, following Swanson’s release by Coventry City last week, talks between St Johnstone chairman Steve Brown and the player’s representative ended with no permanent deal being struck.
The former Dundee United player is now training with Hearts and Wright has moved on.
The manager said: “We missed out on Danny as a loan deal and the offer we made when he was released wasn’t enough to get him.
“I spoke to him on Sunday and he is still keen to come here but that would be down to the chairman and whether we change what we’ve offered.
“But I can’t see that happening.
“There are various reasons why we haven’t brought someone in, it’s not through a lack of effort.
“Danny was a target for us but he wasn’t the only one. Missing out on people is nothing new.
“That’s the same for all managers.
“I’m happy with the squad we have, we are strong and I think we’ll still have a good season.
“I’m happy with the way we’ve conducted our business over the summer.
“I have looked at the free agent list but I only want to bring someone in who will improve the squad.
“So it might be a case of waiting until January before looking at it again.
“If someone comes up that I feel will improve things for us, then I’ll go to the chairman.”
Meanwhile, Steven Anderson will make his long-awaited comeback from injury today, playing for the Under-20s.
It will be his first action since sustaining a fractured eye socket against Alashkert in the Europa League back in July.
While delighted to see Anderson return, Wright is understandably wary about reintroducing the defender to the first-team squad too quickly.
He added: “Ando will play in the Under-20s game on Tuesday against Ross County.
“My thinking will be that he’s likely to need another game after that because he’s been out for quite a while.
“But after that he’ll be fit and ready to go, which is great because this is an important month for us.
“Murray Davidson is fine after his head knock.”
