St Johnstone skipper Dave Mackay reckons the Perth club have every right to revel in their most recent heroics at Parkhead.
Mackay scored the winner back in 2011 when Saints last beat Celtic on their own patch and the captain was instrumental once more as Danny Swanson’s superb volley saw them repeat the feat on Wednesday evening.
It was certainly a night to remember for all of the Saints players and fans, and Mackay revealed the experience ranks up there with the best of them.
“It will probably be up there among my top five favourite games, although it didn’t mean as much as May 17 at the same stadium!” he commented.
“I think this was a better all-round performance from the team than when we won four years ago.
“Keeper Peter Enckelman saved an early penalty that day.
“They had won eight games in a row but we felt confident this week.
“We took a lot of belief from the way we finished the Celtic game at home, despite losing 2-1.
“Since then we have kept three clean sheets and got seven points so we are happy with that.
“We played very well and limited them to very few chances.
“We also played good football and scored a great goal to win it.
“Danny’s goal was incredible but he put in a real shift.
“I nearly had a heart attack because I just saw someone four feet five hitting it and thought it was Chris Millar at first.
“We’d never have heard the end of it if had been Midge!”
The challenge for Saints now is to stay in the top six, although Mackay is aiming further up the table if possible.
“We are up into joint fifth and United aren’t far away now,” he added.
“We were probably being written off this week but I am sure we will stay in the top six.
“What an achievement that would be, making it four years in a row.
“We stick to our budget and we have worked wonders.”
