St Johnstone 0 Celtic 1: Stevie May feels robbed by penalty denial

Saints striker Stevie May appeals for a penalty but referee Craig Thomson waves play on.

St Johnstone striker Stevie May claimed he was robbed of a penalty in the 1-0 home loss to Celtic.

Just before the hour mark, May appeared to be held back by Hoops defender Virgil van Dijk, the man who scored the only goal of the game for Neil Lennon’s men.

It was a sore one for the Scotland under-21 star, who led a spirited second-half showing from the hosts as they tried to reply to van Dijk’s superb fifth-minute strike.

“I have not seen it (the spot-kick incident) back but I thought at the time that it was a penalty,” said May.

“He has stuck his arm out across me and stopped me. He saw me coming across and I thought it was a penalty.

“I guess I will need to see it again to be sure.”

Saints were a team transformed after a lacklustre opening half dominated by the visitors.

May added: “I don’t think we were poor in the first half but we came out fighting even more in the second. We had a foothold in the game and were pushing to get that goal, which unfortunately never came.

“It was always going to be a tough game for us and the early goal made it that bit harder but I thought the boys battled away well and we had chances in the game.

“Celtic are a very good side, though, and you need to be on your game for 90 minutes to get a result against them.”

Van Dijk, meanwhile, admitted that he thought he would have been challenged as he rampaged forward before opening the scoring.

Asked if he expected to be tackled, he replied: “Yes. In other games I have tried it and I’ve been tackled, but this time there wasn’t one,” he said.

“I think it was a good goal. Was it the best goal of my career? Yes, I think so. But I’ve not scored a lot so that’s not difficult.”
