Steven Anderson needs to be reminded how many games he has to play before he breaks the St Johnstone all-time appearance record.
And that’s because the prospect of passing Alan Main isn’t at the front of his mind.
Eight is the number of games that will take him to the top, but it’s the eight matches Saints have gone without a win that is concerning him more.
“I don’t even think about the appearance record,” Anderson said. “It’s not something I’ve been looking at.
“If I break it it will be nice, but someone else will come along after me and have more appearances one day.
“The gaffer has told me I’m eight games away from it or something, but I genuinely haven’t thought about it.
“All I’m thinking about it staying in the team.”
The former Dundee United player, who has clocked up 354 appearances compared to Main’s 361, added: “We’re frustrated to be losing goals and losing games.
“Every mistake is being punished at the moment, it’s incredible.
“Crosses are taking deflections, free kicks are hitting walls and going in.
“It’s just one of those runs where small things are becoming big things because we’re being punished for everything.
“It happens in football, when we were on our good run we were getting away with things that we’re now not.
“But we need to be better, we need to defend better as a team.
“We need to cut out the mistakes because they are killing us. It’s not just at the back, it’s mistakes all over the park.
“You only get praised for winning games, you don’t get praised for losing them and rightly so.
“So there’s no point going on about having a decent performance if you are getting beat.”
Saints have slipped from fourth to fifth and would drop a further place if they lose to Dundee on Friday night.
“Nobody is panicking,” Anderson pointed out. “We’re experienced enough to deal with it and most of us have been here before.
“We’ve been through runs like this plenty times over the years, we’ll come through it and be fine.
“We’re sitting fifth in the league but we want to keep progressing and do better than last season.
“The first aim is the top six but we don’t take that for granted.
“We’ve been in there for the last few years but we don’t automatically expect it it’s hard work that gets you there.”
Dundee have been one of the Premiership’s highest scorers, so Anderson knows the Perth defence will have to be at its best at Dens.
He said: “Against Dundee you have to defend well because they are very good up front.
“So going there you need to be solid at the back.
“But it’s not just about the back four, obviously the focus goes on the defenders when you’re losing goals.
“But it’s about the whole team, you have to defend from the front and stop the ball getting to the defence.
“That’s something we’ve been really good at in the past and we have to get back to that.”
Meanwhile, Anderson backed club captain Dave Mackay to come back from his latest hip injury.
“It’s frustrating for Dave and we all feel for him,” he said.
“We saw how hard he worked to get back earlier this season and then it has flared up again.
“So he needs another operation and will have to battle back from that as well.
“He’ll get a good pre-season under his belt in the summer and hopefully be back for the start of next season.”
Anderson’s contract runs out in the summer but he doesn’t see an urgent need for talks about an extension.
He explained: “I’ve got the option of another year if I play enough games so we’ll just wait and see.
“There’s no rush because I effectively have another year if I take it up.
“I’m happy here so there’s no need to rush.”
