Catching the eye of Celtic boss Ronny Deila isn’t a priority for St Johnstone signing Darnell Fisher.
Making a good impression with his new manager is all he’s concerned about.
The full-back has arrived at McDiarmid Park on a one-year loan deal but won’t be able to make his Saints debut until after the international break, as he isn’t allowed to play against his parent club at Parkhead tomorrow.
Not that he would have minded.
“It is frustrating that I can’t get started right away and then there is an international break,” the 21-year-old said.
“I was going to ask if I could play against Celtic but it is probably sensible for the clubs to have the agreement in place.
“You want to play every game as a footballer and it would have been special playing at Celtic Park.
“I have no idea who I’d have been up against. But you can bet it would have been fierce and competitive because we train hard at Celtic.”
Fisher added: “I was keen to get out on loan. At the start of pre-season the manager (Deila) said ‘no’ but he came round to the idea.
“I got the call from the gaffer here saying he wanted me. He told me he had tried to get me a few times before and that was reassuring, knowing how much he wanted to bring me to St Johnstone.
“I didn’t have to think too hard about it. I jumped at the chance of coming here
“It has been disappointing not to make the breakthrough this season but that’s football. You have to accept it and move on.
“There’s a lot of competition at Celtic with Mikael Lustig the first choice right back and he is a Swedish international.
“It was hard getting into the side last year as well but I learned a lot from Mikael and Adam Matthews.
“Hopefully I will get a chance now to show what I learned from them.
“But it’s not about just showing the manager at Celtic what I can do. It is about St Johnstone, that is the club I am at just now. I want to do well here and whatever happens after than can take care of itself.
“It’s good that I am here for the full season. I can concentrate on having a good year here, rather than coming in for a few months.”
Fisher will be at Celtic Park to take in the match, insisting that he will definitely be in “the blue end”.
He said: “The way I see it I am a St Johnstone player now for the season and hopefully the boys here can get a good result.
“I have played against St Johnstone a few times in Perth and at Celtic Park. They have made it difficult for Celtic. I remember a hard game in Perth two years ago when Virgil scored a brilliant early goal and we ended up hanging on for a 1-0 win.”
