St Johnstone’s master marksman forced to reset target

Stevie May has set himself a new target after reaching the 20-goal mark with his winner against Partick Thistle.

May slammed the ball home to secure a vital 1-0 victory for the McDiarmid men on Tuesday night at Firhill.

Now that he has scored a score, the lethal marksman is aiming even higher.

“It (his 20th goal) was a personal milestone,” he said. “I have a new target now.

“I think I will add five, which is what I have done after reaching targets throughout the season.

“I have set a few totals for myself and have added on a few every time I have reached one.

“I could never have expected to start the season quite so well and then carry on like this.

“I was confident I could score goals but not to this extent.

“Now I have made it this far, I know I can do it again and I am confident I can continue like this for the rest of the season.

“I have always gone with the theory that if I believe I will score then I will.

“Also, I feel I am definitely playing better, even more so than I was at the start of the season.

“I think it took time to get used to playing with a new group of boys.

“I didn’t know them in terms of playing with them on a Saturday but I am playing with more confidence now and as all strikers know that is half the battle.”

May’s strike against Thistle also moved him on to the 16 mark one ahead of Inverness Caley Thistle’s Billy McKay in the race to be the top scorer in the Scottish Premiership this season.

So can he finish top of the pile and pick up a coveted award?

May said: “The golden boot isn’t something I would have said was a target but I have to be looking at it now.”

His main priority, though, is pushing Tommy Wright’s sixth-placed team further up the league table and they are now within striking distance two points of Dundee United, who they play at Tannadice on Monday night.

“There is no reason why we can’t get European football again,” said May. “The gaffer was saying going into last week that we were one point better off than we were at that stage last season.

“If we can hit a run, all the other teams can hit a dip like you have seen with Dundee United.

“It was a great three points for us against Partick. They made it a hard game and in the second half we were under the cosh for large parts of the game but the boys held on, defended well and got the win.”
