St Johnstone delighted to sign ‘twilight’ star Chris Iwelumo

St Johnstone manager Tommy Wright says there is scope for Chris Iwelumo to play his way in to a longer stay at McDiarmid Park after signing the striker until the end of the season.

The 35-year-old, who has been capped for Scotland four times, completed his move from Scunthorpe United and will go straight in to the squad for Monday’s trip to Dundee United.

And Wright reckons his new signing will be desperate to prove to Scottish fans that there is more to him than THAT miss against Norway in a World Cup qualifier.

“I have been looking for presence in that area of the team and Chris is a powerful striker and holds the ball up well,” Wright said.

“He has a knack of scoring goals and he comes here with a wealth of experience.

“Chris has played at international level and the top flight in England. He is a real professional and he will be a big influence in our dressing room, especially on the younger lads.

“He may be in the twilight of his career but he has a lot to offer.

“His enthusiasm was obvious when we met and discussed the prospect of coming back to Scotland, which he left at 19.

“He may be 35 but he is fit and in great condition. I have no concerns whatsoever about his age and I think he will add a different dimension to us.”
