St Johnstone’s Scottish Cup quarter-final against Raith Rovers is the pick of the last eight draw, according to Perth boss Tommy Wright.
And as such, it should be selected for live television coverage, he insisted. Wright believes the Kirkcaldy clash has more going for it than the Aberdeen versus Dumbarton and Rangers versus Albion Rovers fixtures.
Wright explained: “It should be a great game and right now for me it is the stand-out tie of the round. It is perfect for live television.
“Inverness still have to overcome Stranraer to set up an all SPFL clash with Dundee United but if that comes to pass it is another obvious candidate.
“Our game with Raith will attract a near full house and there will be an old fashioned cup tie atmosphere.
“They had a brilliant result against Hibs and will see another chance to pull off a shock against us. They will fancy their chances. It should be a cracking tie.
“I feel it is a good draw for us and we deserve a bit of luck in terms of live television coverage.”
Both in the League Cup and the Scottish Cup Saints have been faultless in the way in which they have overcome potential banana skins at Championship and League One venues.
It’s that pedigree which Wright believes gives his side a good chance of progressing to their second semi-final of the season.
He said: “We have competed well against lower league teams in the cups and we always approach them as if we were going up against the best team in the country.”
“We were very professional in our performance against Forfar at the weekend and it will be the same against Raith Rovers.
One of the many positives to come out of the Station Park rout was the impressive 20-minute debut of loan midfielder James Dunne. The fact that he capped it off with a top-quality goal was a bonus.
Wright said: “It was good to get him on against Forfar at a stage when we were in control and Chris (Iwelumo) also got a run, giving Stevie May a chance to have a wee breather.”
