St Johnstone will give Morton respect but manager Tommy Wright knows the Scottish League Cup quarter-final draw could have been worse for his club.
Saints will travel to Cappielow on October 29/30 to take on the Greenock men and Wright said: “Even with Celtic still in the competition, Kilmarnock and St Mirren have proved you can win it.
“But a lot of chairmen and managers will be rubbing their hands and it’s hard to say who are the favourites now.
“Everybody in the quarter-finals will think they’ve got a chance of winning, which is great for the competition.
“Morton will give us a tough game but we’re potentially only two matches away from the final.”
Dundee United were handed the toughest challenge available for the second round in succession when the draw was made at Hampden on Thursday.
The Tangerines face Premiership leaders Inverness Caley Thistle in the Highland capital.
With the Hoops out, it couldn’t have been any more difficult for United, with Terry Butcher’s men Scotland’s in-form side.
The Tangerines might have expected a bit of a break when the names were picked out, considering they had been matched with SPL newcomers Partick Thistle in the previous round the highest-ranked unseeded team.
Jackie McNamara led his players to a 4-1 win over the Jags in midweek, of course, and he was staying philosophical about taking on the other Thistle in the quarters.
“If you want to win a trophy like the League Cup, you are going to have to face these teams sooner or later,” said the United boss.
“I know it is a tough draw, and yet again it couldn’t be any harder really, so we are being asked to do it the hard way but we will travel believing in ourselves and full of confidence.”
Draw: Inverness v Dundee Utd, Morton v St Johnstone, Hibernian v Hearts, Motherwell v Aberdeen. Ties to be played on October 29/30.
