“Magnificent” St Johnstone midfielder David Wotherspoon has been hailed by Tommy Wright as one of his best signings.
The former Hibs man has hit top form recently, culminating in a starring role in last weekend’s Tayside derby win over Dundee United.
Wright believes Wotherspoon, who signed a new two-year deal a few weeks ago, can progress his career further if he can add the final piece to the jigsaw – goals.
You have to go back to August of last season for the 25-year-old’s one and only strike for the Perth club.
“He is a wonderfully gifted footballer, a worker, a great passer of the ball and he can run with it and ghost past people as well,” Wright said.
“There’s no doubt he can move to a higher level if he can add goals to his game.
“Right now that’s the only thing holding him back.
“He’s working on it and if he gets it right we will have clubs banging on our door.
“I was delighted to get David from Hibs and delighted to get him on an extended contract. I was pleased with David from day one and he has been one of my best signings.”
Wotherspoon is hoping to get a chance to prove himself as a central midfielder, but his displays from wide right are making it hard for his manager to change things at the moment.
The Northern Irishman noted: “Michael O’Halloran quite rightly got the headlines for his two goals against United but David was magnificent in the derby win.
“He was unlucky not to score with a typically brilliant individual run and he should probably have got a penalty after being clipped by Sean Dillon.
“I know he wants to play more centrally but he does a great job on the right, especially away from home.
“I am delighted with David’s form. Now he just needs a goal or two.”
