Swansea City loan star Gwion Edwards would love to see St Johnstone progress to the group stages of the Europa League and meet his parent club.
The Welsh winger revealed he was bombarded with congratulatory text messages from his Swans team-mates after they spotted Saints had sent the fancied Norwegians packing.
After getting a run-out in the 1-0 friendly defeat from League Two side Morecambe at McDiarmid Park, Edwards said: “I got a few messages from the Swansea boys and coaches saying well done after we put out Rosenborg.
“I had texts from the likes of Ben Davies. I came through the youth team with him. They are looking forward to their own game against Malmo on Thursday when we play Minsk.
“But they were impressed with our results and thought it was a good achievement beating Rosenborg. They are a big club who have played in the Champions League. For us to beat them and go through is a massive achievement and they appreciate that.
“One or two have said ‘imagine if we come against you’. You never know what can happen.
“Maybe it could happen in the group stages if we can get there but we have to get past Minsk.
“I don’t think I will be able to play against Swansea if we both get through. I would have to check the small print ion the loan deal. I’m not sure Swansea would let me play against them.
“It would be great if we did face Swansea. But really we’re just looking to push on after putting out Rosenborg.”
Perth manager Tommy Wright gave all his starts from the Rosenborg tie a weekend break with this week’s trip to Belarus in mind.
Edwards, Gary Miller, Rory Fallon and new arrival Murray Davidson featured in an unfamiliar starting line-up.
Saints lost to a first-half Marcus Marshall goal which evaded keeper Zander Cark and found the net via a post, and Edwards said: “It was a shame we didn’t get a win but it was a good run out for the boys and we played some good football.”
Wright revealed that defender Steven Anderson is a major doubt with a knee injury but midfielder Chris Millar has recovered from the groin strain which kept him sidelined in the 1-1 draw with Rosenborg.
Wright, who spent yesterday assessing footage of Minsk supplied by Valletta boss Mark Miller after playing in a charity game at McDiarmid, said: “There was no way we could risk any of the players who started against the Norwegians. We couldn’t take any chances.
“It was decent enough exercise but maybe it was too friendly at times for us.
Former Rangers, Dunfermline and Aberdeen midfielder Barry Nicholson got a run against Morecambe and was twice denied a goal by keeper Barry Roche.
The 34-year-old has been given access to training facilities with the Perth side as he seeks to map out his future after leaving Fleetwood Town.
