ST JOHNSTONE boss Steve Lomas is still on Doncaster Rovers’ radar regarding the vacant manager’s post at the Keepmoat, Courier Sport understands.
The 38-year-old remains one of the favourites to replace Dean Saunders at the English League One club and Lomas is thought to be one of just a handful of names on the Doncaster board’s wish list.
Although no official approach to speak to Lomas has yet been made to his current employers, Rovers chairman John Ryan and chief executive Gavin Baldwin met to discuss Saunders’ successor on Tuesday and will draw up a shortlist today.
And it is understood that Lomas’s name will be near the top, as Rovers seek to continue their promotion push south of the border.
The Northern Irishman guided Saints to a place in the Europa League last season and currently has them sitting just four points behind second-placed Inverness in the SPL.
But with just one more year to go on his current contract at McDiarmid Park, Lomas may be interested in hearing what Doncaster have to say if a formal approach is made.
Along with Lomas, interim Rovers manager Brian Flynn, Huddersfield coach and former Rovers player Glynn Snodin, Oldham manager Paul Dickov and Stevenage boss Gary Smith are also said to be among the front-runners.
Doncaster host Leyton Orient on Saturday looking for a third straight win, which would be a second under caretaker duo Flynn and skipper Rob Jones.
Flynn, who headed the bookies’ list of favourites last night, has expressed his desire to take on the job on a permanent basis and a continuation in recent form would do his cause no harm.
However, Lomas has remained near the head of the betting since Saunders’ departure to Wolves and was 9-4 second favourite with the bookies last night.
A Rovers spokesman said: “Although the process of finalising the shortlist is a difficult one due to the high calibre of applicants, the board are looking to conclude the shortlist on Thursday when dates for interviews and interviewees will also be confirmed.”
