Arbroath Golf Links has teed up a new scheme offering free membership for juveniles to combat dwindling interest in the sport.
Any adult member paying the full subscription of £250 will now be entitled to sign up a son or daughter aged 15 or under at no extra cost.
In addition any youngster under the age of 12 who still attends primary school can join the club free of charge, regardless of parental membership.
Course convener Tom Pullar said the move was part of a drive to expand growth at a time when golf is struggling to attract young people.
“It is all about trying to get the young ones in to golf. We already offer the free coaching for the small children aged under 10 so this is about targeting the 12 to 15 year olds.
“I don’t think there are any golf clubs that are not having problems attracting new members and a lot of the traditional waiting lists are just about extinct.”
Arbroath councillor David Fairweather welcomed the move as a boost for parents in the town looking to get their children involved in affordable exercise.
“In what is a difficult economic time this is a tremendous opportunity for families that are interested in getting involved in golf to become part of an enjoyable sport.”
A new five-day ticket is set to be introduced for senior members aged 65 and over at a cost of £170.
