WORLD No 1 Rory McIlroy has been named the European Tour golfer of the year.

Ulsterman McIlroy (23) succeeds Luke Donald as winner of the award, having also replicated the Englishman’s unprecedented achievement of winning both the Race to Dubai and US PGA Tour money list in the same season.

He captured his second major in August, winning the US PGA Championship, played a vital role in Europe’s Ryder Cup victory and finished the year by winning the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai.
