Colin Montgomerie wins Senior PGA Championship

The victory ended a decades-long barren spell in the US for Monty.
The victory ended a decades-long barren spell in the US for Monty.

Colin Montgomerie finished four shots clear to win the Senior PGA Championship and claim his first official victory in America on Sunday.

The Scot teed off seven under par and one shot ahead of 56-year-old German Bernhard Langer before a superb final round of 65 saw Monty take the title 13 under on 271.

The 31-time European Tour winner has never won a regular major championship, finishing runner-up five times.

His only previous victory in America was at the 1998 World Championship Match Play event, which at the time was unofficial.

Tom Watson posed a late challenge at Harbor Shores, climbing the leaderboard with an excellent final round of 65 to finish runner-up with an aggregate score of nine under.

Montgomerie settled any early nerves with a birdie on the first hole before posting three consecutive sub-par scores on the eighth, ninth and 10th.

The veteran seemed to gain confidence from the surge and registered further birdies at the 12th, 14th and 15th to establish a comfortable advantage ahead of his rivals.

Langer and America’s Jay Haas both finished six shots behind the leader on seven under par while Joe Durant, Mark Brooks, David Frost and Bart Bryant were seven shots back on six under.
