Fife Constabulary have pledged to clamp down on any potential troublemakers and bad behaviour in St Andrews when the 150th Open Championship is played there this summer.
Extra police officers will patrol the town centre throughout the week of the championship from July 11-18 to ensure the safety of residents and visitors.
Following the tragic death of one golf fan at the last Open in St Andrews when he plunged over cliffs on the seafront, a campaign warning people of the dangers will be mounted.
Addressing members of St Andrews Community Council on police plans, Superintendent John Pow said that an area of concern would be “the night-time economy.”
He said, “Officers will take positive action against any disorderly behaviour.
“We want people to have a peaceful event.”
Mr Pow also warned golf fans and other members of the public that the event was likely to attract the criminal element, in particular pickpockets, and advised people to be on their guard.
At the 2005 Open South African Derek Blane (31) was fatally injured when he fell from cliffs at the rear of a residential property. It was believed he thought he was taking a shortcut to the beach.
