GB international Laura Muir (Dundee Hawkhill) won the UK Indoor 1,500m title in Sheffield, qualifying for the European Championships in Prague from March 6-8.

The Milnathort athlete took the final in four minutes 13.06 seconds holding off the chasing Alison Leonard (Blackburn) 4:13.57.

Muir’s time was outside the qualifying time of 4:13.00 required for Prague but with a 4:10.04 at the Scottish National Open in January, the veterinary student’s place on the plane to the Czech capital is assured.

Muir will be looking to lay low the spectre of last winter’s World Indoor Championships in Poland when she failed to reach the 800m final after stumbling, finishing second in two minutes 02.55 seconds, which was not quick enough to qualify for the final.

Having breezed through his 800m heat in 1:49.78 Guy Learmonth (Lasswade) controlled the final at 1:49.00 taking the title a stride ahead of Glasgow Caledonian student James Bowness’ 1:49.06.

Learmonth’s time was, however, frustratingly outside the 1:48.00 Prague qualifying time.

Further medals for Scottish athletes came in the 400m finals, with Kirsten McAslan’s 53.05 taking gold while Jamie Bowie placed 3rd in the men’s final (47.18). Alan Smith produced a personal best of 1.29m to win the high jump, 11cm clear of the opposition.

Heptathlete Katarina Johnson-Thompson (Liverpool) set a new British high jump record, with the 22-year-old clearing 1.97m.

“I’m glad to jump a personal best but I can’t believe I’m a little disappointed with 1.97m,” she said.

Evergreen Jenny Meadows claimed the women’s 800m title with a front- running display from gun to tape timed at 2:01.43.

Stewarty’s Katy Brown took the bronze medal in a personal best 2:03.39 behind Shelayna Oskan-Clarke’s 2:02.91.

Chijindu Ujah (Enfield & Haringey) posted a convincing victory in the 60m (6.57).

* Perth Strathtay Harrier Ben Greenwood posted a 1,500m and 800m double at the Scottish Junior Indoor Championships at the Emirates Arena, Glasgow.

Greenwood won the 800m final, his fourth race of the day, in 1:54.70 just a fraction shy of his own Scottish under-17 record set at the indoor league in December.

The 1,500m final came down to a dual between Greenwood and Fife AC’s Adam Scott. Greenwood prevailed in 4:22.57 with under-16 Scottish Schools champion Scott, moving up to the under-17 age group, a close second in 4:28.38.

The under-13s 800m final brought a golden harvest for Lewis Blair (Pitreavie), who timed at 2:20.48.
