Dundee boxer Jamie Wilson is confident he can bring the Commonwealth belt back to the city by beating Anthony “Babyface” Nelson in his own backyard.
Wilson (23) will venture deep into Geordieland on Saturday to take on South Shields fighter Nelson at Newcastle’s Metro Arena.
He has every intention of shocking the home crowd in what will only his sixth fight as a professional.
The super-flyweight contest will be the chief support act to Olympic gold medallist Anthony Joshua’s comeback clash against American Jason Gavern.
The bill, which will be televised by Sky, will also include Scotland’s popular Commonwealth Games gold medal winner Charlie Flynn in only his second pro outing, while fellow Scot Stephen Simmons will defend his WBC International Silver Cruiserweight title against local man Jon-Lewis Dickinson.
Wilson and Nelson will both be putting their unbeaten records on the line to claim the crown vacated by Kal Yafai, with the Birmingham boxer dropping down to flyweight.
The Dundonian is full of self-belief as he prepares to launch his cross-border raid.
Wilson said: “Nelson has got a good record and he is a quality boxer so I’m expecting a tough one but I’m confident of coming away with the title.
“This is definitely my biggest fight so far.
“It’s a massive occasion and I’m really excited about it.
“I want to enjoy it and enjoy being on Sky TV.
“I’m confident I can win.
“I will be the best fighter he has boxed and he will be the best fighter I have boxed so it is going to be interesting.
“I think his style will suit me.
“I have had a wee glimpse of him on YouTube and I think we will clash quite well.
“It will be a good fight for the fans to watch.
“This is a night every boxer wants so the main thing is to enjoy it but coming back with the title is the goal.”
Wilson feels confident going into his first 12-round bout despite being the underdog and is looking to make history for himself and Dundee.
He added: “I was just really excited when I heard the fight was on.
“It’s the news every boxer wants, isn’t it?
“I have done eight rounds before for the British Master’s title so it’s only adding a few on top of that.
“I was fighting a few weeks ago so I have just upped the training since then and I’m in great shape now.
“It is a wee chance to make history and it gives me extra motivation, not that I need it for a fight like this.
“It’s going to open doors for me and hopefully get bigger fights and more titles.
“I would be confident fighting anyone else in the division but I’ve got to concentrate on winning this one first and just see what happens from there.”
Meanwhile promoter Eddie Hearn can’t wait to see Wilson take on Nelson.
Hearn said: “This is a great chance for Anthony Nelson and Jamie Wilson to steal the show.
“Nelson will have the crowd behind him and it’s going to be a hostile atmosphere for the young Scotsman to contend with but I’m delighted that they both get this shot at the big time.”
